Chimaeriformes
Occasionally called ghost sharks or rat fish, this order is often found in temperate ocean waters around the world. Chimaeras range in size from 1-5 feet long, living up to their name.
Similar to sharks and rays, ghost sharks have cartilage instead of bone. They have been seen as having large heads, big eyes, and silk-like skin. Most ghost sharks have thick bodies that end with a long and thin rat-like tail. To move they propel themselves through the water by flapping their large wing-like fins. These fish do not have sharp teeth like sharks. Most species in this order have poisonous dorsal fins. |
This organism is known as an Elephantfish. You can see the poisonous dorsal fin.
These fish are often found on the bottom of the sea floor, preying on clams and crustaceans.
